On Wednesday 24th January 2007, the Foundation organised a Metal on Metal (MoM) Research Forum day with the following participants:
Forty five guests attended the lecture, including the Foundation’s trustees, leading surgeons, and academics specialising in the fields of Biomechanics and Biomaterials.
The Science Museum proved a perfect venue and the evening was enjoyed by all who attended.

Advisory Panel (not present)
Professor W Bonfield
Ms S Muirhead-Allwood
Professor A Moroni
Mr J Skinner
Dr Minoo Esat, who chaired the meeting, gave an overview presentation on MoM articulation taking into consideration the metallurgy and microstructure of metal, followed by an extremely educational presentation by Professor John Fisher, entitled Biotribology of Metal on Metal. Mr Alister Hart, one of UK’s most active researchers in the biological effects of MoM articulation, presented his work on the effects of cobalt and chromium wear particles from MoM hip replacement. This session ended with a very productive round table debate.
In the afternoon Drs Sabokbar and Mabilleau presented their research on the effects of metal ions on bone cells, followed by Professor Cobb’s talk on accurate surgery, techniques and technology.
This forum was an exceptional opportunity to discuss future objectives with eminent researchers in the field. It was felt by all present that research forums of this size and expertise achieve a great deal and should be repeated on a regular basis. The meeting also resulted in stronger collaborative ties between all the attendees.
The day ended with Dr Esat thanking everyone for their most valuable contribution and concluding that MoM articulation should be approached in a multi-disciplinary manner. This forum touched on materials science, engineering, biological effects, mechanisms of failure and the effects of surgical procedure on MoM articulation.
Comments from attendees:
“Very much enjoyed the research day - very stimulating. I came away with lots of ideas.”
“We must not underestimate the strength of this group and what we have achieved here today.”
